​According to St. Augustine, a sacrament is a visible expression of invisible grace. In the Catholic Church, there are seven sacraments: the Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist; the Sacraments of Healing – Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick; and the Sacraments of Vocation – Matrimony and Holy Orders.
Our children should be enrolled for catechists (religious education) every year between 1st and 8th grade, whether a child is receiving a sacrament in that year or not. After 8th grade, we should attend adult education to continue to grow in our understanding in faith. To prepare for a sacrament, please contact the office for additional information.
You must register your child in our catechism program to prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation. Click on the Education tab for more information.
Non-Sacramental Celebrations
A Quinceañera is not a sacrament, but is a coming of age ceremony on a girl's fifteenth birthday. If you would like to celebrate a Quinceañera at Assumption or Our Lady of the Lake Church, please contact the office to get an application and instructions for completing the preparation.
Reconciliation / Penance
​The Sacrament of Penance, also know as the Rite of Reconciliation, is the "liturgical celebration of God's forgiveness of the sins of the penitent, who is thus reconciled with God and with the Church. The acts of the penitent-contrition, the confession of sins, and satisfaction or reparation-together with the prayer of absolution by the priest, constitute the essential elements of the Sacrament of Penance" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 980, 1422, 1440, 1448).
Anointing of the Sick / Dying

Anointing of the Sick is "one of the seven sacraments,...administered by a priest to a baptized person who begins to be in danger of death because of illness or old age, through prayer and the anointing with the oil of the sick. The proper effects of the sacrament include a special grace of healing and comfort to the Christian who is suffering the infirmities of serious illness or old age, and the forgiving of the person's sins" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1499, 1520, 1523, 1526-1532).
​The grace of this sacrament unites the sick disciple more closely to the suffering of Christ, strengthens the disciple to endure his own suffering with peace and courage, and forgives any sins that were not previously forgiven in the Sacrament of Penance. The Catechism describes the Anointing of the Sick in sections 1499-1532; please read those pages to understand more fully when this sacrament should be requested and what are the effects of such Anointing.
Matrimony / Marriage
​A couple who is considering marriage should contact the parish office at 530- 587-3595.  Minimum of six (6) months to one year preparation process prior to the wedding date. As per Diocesan policy, all weddings are celebrated in the actual church; outdoor weddings are not permitted.
Marriage is a "covenant or partnership of life between a man and woman, which is ordered to the well-being of the spouses and to the procreation and upbringing of children. When validly contracted between two baptized people, marriage is a sacrament" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1601). 
Unlike the other six sacraments which are all administered by a bishop, priest, or deacon, the sacrament of matrimony is administered by the husband and wife to each other; the priest or deacon is merely the Church's witness who blesses the union created by the exchange of consent. The marriage bond, created only by those who are truly free by God's law to marry, is an irrevocable covenant which binds the spouses to each other for life, and the sacrament of matrimony conveys the special grace necessary to strengthen them for lifelong fidelity and growth in holiness.

Baptism
Contact the office to obtain the application for baptism for your child and the application for the godparents for your child. If they are not a married couple, have the godparents complete separate baptismal applications.
As you prepare for the Baptism of your child, the Church and your parish community offer your family their support. Together, we can begin to undertake the Christian upbringing of your child and explore the meaning of Baptism not just for the day of the ceremony, but for life.
Baptism Preparation Classes for Parents and Godparents are ordinarily held the third Monday of the month in Truckee. (Please check the church calendar on this website for changes, our weekly bulletin or our Facebook Page)

Parents and godparents are required to attend a baptism preparedness class. Classes are held in the meeting room of Assumption Parish at 6:00 p.m. in Spanish and at 7:00 p.m. in English.

Holy Eucharist / Communion
​"Truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you" (John 6:53).
At the heart of the Holy Eucharist are the bread and wine that, by the words of Christ and the invocation of the Holy Spirit, truly and substantially become the Body and Blood of the risen and glorified Lord Jesus. The Eucharist is the heart and the summit of the Church's life, for in it, Christ associates his Church and all her members with his sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving offered once for all on the cross to his Father; by this sacrifice he pours out the graces of salvation on his Body which is the Church" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1407).
The Most Holy Eucharist is described in sections 1322-1412 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and we encourage every family to study these pages of the Catechism carefully in order to understand more deeply the inexhaustible riches of the sacred Mystery of Christ's Body and Blood. Even as we struggle to understand this Mystery of Faith, we rejoice in this most sublime and abiding sacrifice of praise.

Confirmation
By Confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Lord Jesus and His Church, and they are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit to be witnesses of Christ and the truth of His Gospel.

RCIA 
​The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is a program to evangelize and catechize all people coming into the fullness of the Catholic faith in adulthood. If you have questions about joining this journey of faith, contact the office, 530-587-3595.
